Homemade Apple Cider: A Simple Guide
If you love the taste of fresh apple cider, why not try making it at home? It's easier than you might think, and the end result is delicious! Here’s a simple guide to help you create your own homemade apple cider.
Prep the Apples: Wash and cut your apples into quarters. There's no need to peel or core them—just slice them into chunks. The more variety of apples you use, the better your cider will taste.
Add to the Pot: Place your apple pieces into a large pot or slow cooker. If you’re using an orange, cut it into quarters and add it to the mix too. The citrus will add a lovely brightness to the cider.
Spices: Toss in your cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice. These spices will give your cider that warm, cozy flavor. You can adjust the spices to your taste depending on how spicy you like it!
Add Water and Sugar: Pour enough water into the pot to cover the fruit. Start with about 10-12 cups, and add more if needed as it simmers. Stir in the brown sugar. Taste the mixture to see if it needs more sweetness and adjust accordingly.
Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once it boils, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 2-3 hours. You’ll want to stir it occasionally and check to make sure the apples break down. If you’re using a slow cooker, cook on low for 6-8 hours.
Mash the Apples: Once the apples are soft and the cider is bubbling away with flavor, use a potato masher or a wooden spoon to mash the apples. This will release more of the juice and deepen the cider's flavor.
Strain the Cider: After mashing, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into another pot or large bowl. Be sure to press out all the liquid from the solids to get the most juice. Discard the remaining pulp, or use it for compost!
Serve or Store: Taste your cider and adjust the sweetness if needed. You can serve it warm or chill it in the fridge for a refreshing cold cider. If you want to make a large batch, you can store it in an airtight container for up to a week.
Enjoy your homemade apple cider! It's the perfect drink for a cozy evening, a fall gathering, or even just to enjoy the taste of apples at any time of year.
